\"C\u00edcero<\/p>\n

C\u00edcero de Medeiros, an illustrious Azorean journalist, passed away on 18 July 1967 at the S\u00e3o Jos\u00e9 Hospital in Ponta Delgada, at the age of 61. He was born on 21 December 1905 in Fenais da Ajuda, in the municipality of Ribeira Grande, and spent a large part of his youth as an emigrant in Brazil. Returning to the Azores in 1920, he enrolled at the Liceu de Ponta Delgada and, while still a student, feeling a passion for journalism, he began writing for the \u201cCorreio dos A\u00e7ores<\/a><\/span>\u201d. His enthusiasm for journalism continued, leading him to serve as the director of the newspaper \u201cMocidade Acad\u00e9mica\u201d from 1926 to 1927, a contributor to the newspaper \u201cAlma Nova\u201d in 1928, and director of the magazine \u00cdnsula<\/i> in 1933. In 1937, he became the editor-in-chief of the newspaper \u201cCorreio dos A\u00e7ores<\/strong>\u201d, of which he later became the owner and director following the voluntary departure of its former leader, Dr Jos\u00e9 Bruno Carreiro<\/a><\/span>; at the newspaper, he dedicated himself to promoting campaigns and initiatives that marked his unusual dynamism. In 1941, he transferred the directorship of \u201cCorreio dos A\u00e7ores<\/strong>\u201d and, in 1944, founded the newspaper \u201cA\u00e7ores\u201d, of which he was the director for 22 consecutive years until he was forced to relinquish his duties for health reasons. This newspaper became the property of the company Impra\u00e7or and, in December 1993, was converted into a magazine due to the company editing another daily newspaper, the \u201cA\u00e7oriano Oriental<\/strong>\u201d. He was also the founder of Gr\u00e1fica Regional, Tipografia Moderna, and Insular. He was a selfless defender of regional autonomy, having published the article \u201cEchoes of the meeting at Cine-Jade of the democrats of Ponta Delgada\u201d on 23 October 1945, regarding the activities of the district MUD, which included a petition addressed to the Civil Governor, Dr Aniceto dos Santos<\/a><\/span>. In his memory, the municipality of Ponta Delgada named a street after him in the parish of S\u00e3o Sebasti\u00e3o.<\/p>\n

The funeral<\/b><\/h2>\n

\"FuneralThe funeral took place at 5:30 pm on 19 July, following a Requiem Mass at the Sant\u2019Ana Chapel, from where it proceeded to the family vault at the S\u00e3o Joaquim Cemetery. The mourning was led by the District Chief, Eng. Vasconcelos Raposo, with the following shifts organised for the pallbearing:<\/p>\n

1st \u2013 Manuel Lopes de Sousa, Jo\u00e3o Estrela Tavares, M\u00e1rio Machado, and Manuel Marcos, his former employees.<\/p>\n

2nd \u2013 Manuel Ferreira<\/a><\/span>, Fraga Brum, Victor Silva Pedroso, and Dr Silva Fraga.<\/p>\n

3rd \u2013 Dr Carreiro da Costa<\/a><\/span>, Dr Manuel da Silva Carreiro<\/a><\/span>, Commissioner Ant\u00f3nio Joaquim de Bairros, and Professor Jo\u00e3o M. Quental.<\/p>\n

4th \u2013 Visconde do Botelho, Francisco Tavares Sousa Teves, Nuno Botelho da C\u00e2mara, and Jos\u00e9 Joaquim de Azevedo Oliveira Rodrigues.<\/p>\n

5th \u2013 Dinis Jos\u00e9 da Silva, Manuel In\u00e1cio de Melo, Jo\u00e3o Jos\u00e9 de Medeiros, and Prof. Manuel Jacinto de Andrade<\/a><\/span>, his son, his son-in-law, the director, and the editor-in-chief of the newspaper \u201cA\u00e7ores\u201d, respectively.<\/p>\n
