D. Guilherme Augusto da Cunha Guimar\u00e3es<\/a><\/span>. He returned to S\u00e3o Miguel and, on 19 July, celebrated his first Mass (Missa Nova<\/i>) at the Mother Church of S\u00e3o Sebasti\u00e3o. In that same year, he founded the Catholic Association of Ponta Delgada, showing from early on his concern for the spiritual and social formation of the community. He exercised his priestly ministry in the parishes of S\u00e3o Pedro, Furnas, and at the Mother Church of Ponta Delgada, distinguishing himself through his pastoral action and close contact with the people.<\/p>\nIn May 1937, he founded Catholic Scouting in Ponta Delgada, with Group No. 137 of the Corpo Nacional de Escutas<\/i> (CNE) being affiliated under his guidance, where he served as religious assistant. His work in scouting reflected his commitment to the moral, civic, and human development of Azorean youth. On 20 January 1974, he was decorated with the “Cross of Merit” by the National Chief of the CNE, in recognition of his contribution to the scouting movement.<\/p>\n
In addition to his religious activity, he stood out as a teacher of Religion and Ethics at the Liceu Antero de Quental and at the Primary Teacher Training School (Escola do Magist\u00e9rio Prim\u00e1rio<\/i>). He was also one of the driving forces behind the Vincentian Movement in Ponta Delgada, promoting social support actions inspired by the values of Christian solidarity and community service. He was also a polyglot, mastering several foreign languages, which reflected his solid cultural background.<\/p>\n
Throughout his priestly life, he also left a mark on the social and associative life of the region, being remembered for his work with young people and his closeness to parish communities. In tribute to his life’s path, his name was included in the toponymy of the city of Ponta Delgada, in the parish of S\u00e3o Sebasti\u00e3o.<\/p>\n
His funeral took place on 22 February, following the celebration of solemn funeral rites by Father Jos\u00e9 Ribeiro Martins at the Mother Church of S\u00e3o Sebasti\u00e3o, from where the procession proceeded to the S\u00e3o Joaquim Cemetery.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
