After completing his primary education in his hometown, he entered the Seminary of Angra for the 1927-1928 academic year. He received the <b data-path-to-node=\"6\" data-index-in-node=\"235\">Tonsure<\/b> on 26 April 1936, the <b data-path-to-node=\"6\" data-index-in-node=\"265\">Minor Orders of Porter and Lector<\/b> on 3 May 1936, and those of <b data-path-to-node=\"6\" data-index-in-node=\"327\">Exorcist and Acolyte<\/b> on 10 May of the same year; the <b data-path-to-node=\"6\" data-index-in-node=\"380\">Major Order of Subdiaconate<\/b> on 4 April 1937 and that of <b data-path-to-node=\"6\" data-index-in-node=\"436\">Deacon<\/b> on 30 May of the same year. He was ordained to the priesthood on 20 June 1937, at the Cathedral of Angra, by His Excellency Bishop Guilherme Augusto In\u00e1cio da Cunha Guimar\u00e3es, and celebrated his first Mass (<i data-path-to-node=\"6\" data-index-in-node=\"650\">Missa Nova<\/i>) on 11 July 1937, at the Mother Church (<i data-path-to-node=\"6\" data-index-in-node=\"701\">Matriz<\/i>) of Povoa\u00e7\u00e3o.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"7\">He began his career as the parish priest for the villages of Cabouco and Atalhada in S\u00e3o Miguel, then served as the Ecclesiastical Dean (<i data-path-to-node=\"7\" data-index-in-node=\"137\">Ouvidor<\/i>) of Vila do Porto on Santa Maria Island for two years. Subsequently, he served as the Prior of the Mother Church and Ecclesiastical Dean of his hometown, Povoa\u00e7\u00e3o, where he carried out his priestly ministry from 1940 until 2 July 1975. He was widely recognised for his remarkable work, which was not only pastoral but also deeply social and educational. In this regard, he restored the Mother Church temple, was the primary founder of the <i data-path-to-node=\"7\" data-index-in-node=\"584\">Externato Maria Isabel do Carmo Medeiros<\/i>, and was responsible for the construction of housing for the underprivileged in the town.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"8\">Furthermore, in 1938, he was appointed Assistant Vicar (<i data-path-to-node=\"8\" data-index-in-node=\"56\">Vig\u00e1rio Cooperador<\/i>) of Vila do Porto, on Santa Maria Island, and Vicar Oeconomus (<i data-path-to-node=\"8\" data-index-in-node=\"138\">Vig\u00e1rio Ec\u00f3nomo<\/i>) of Povoa\u00e7\u00e3o on 30 June 1940. He was elevated to the rank of <b data-path-to-node=\"8\" data-index-in-node=\"215\">Monsignor<\/b> on 25 October 1963 by <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Pope Paul VI<\/span>, upon the recommendation of the then Bishop, <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/pt.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Manuel_Afonso_de_Carvalho\">Manuel Afonso de Carvalho<\/a><\/span>. On 18 March 1970, he was designated as the first <b data-path-to-node=\"8\" data-index-in-node=\"381\">Episcopal Vicar<\/b> for the islands of S\u00e3o Miguel and Santa Maria, a role he held until 1974. On 2 July 1975, he was appointed Rector of the Sanctuary of Hope (<i data-path-to-node=\"8\" data-index-in-node=\"537\">Santu\u00e1rio da Esperan\u00e7a<\/i>) by the same Bishop, filling the vacancy left by the passing of <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/funerariaferreira.pt\/en\/jose-gomes-monsenhor\/\">Monsignor Jos\u00e9 Gomes<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"9\">In tribute to his legacy, his name has been integrated into local toponymy and bestowed upon a Primary and Nursery School (<i data-path-to-node=\"9\" data-index-in-node=\"123\">Escola B\u00e1sica e Jardim de Inf\u00e2ncia<\/i>), as well as a vocational school in the municipality of Povoa\u00e7\u00e3o.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"10\">On 21 May, his body was transferred from the Bom Jesus Clinic to the Sanctuary of Hope, where a funeral Mass was held at 8:30 am, followed by a concelebrated Mass at 4:00 pm. He was then transferred back to the Mother Church of Povoa\u00e7\u00e3o at 8:30 pm that same evening.
