Born on 6 December 1919 in Ponta Delgada, he completed his secondary education at the Liceu Antero de Quental in 1937, specialising in Arts. He graduated in Classical Philology from the Faculty of Letters in Lisbon in 1941, followed by a pedagogical internship for secondary teaching at the Liceu Normal de Pedro Nunes.<\/p>\n
Upon returning to Ponta Delgada in 1943, he joined the teaching staff of the Liceu Antero de Quental, becoming a permanent professor the following year. He remained there for 34 years, serving as Vice-Rector and, in 1964, as Rector. He was also a professor and director of the Primary Teaching School (Escola do Magist\u00e9rio Prim\u00e1rio<\/i>), an assistant and, in 1976, an auxiliary professor at the University of the Azores. He was appointed a member of the Installation Committee for the Escola Normal Superior<\/i> and later served on the Installation Committee for the Integrated Teacher Training Centre of the Azores Region. In 1980, he earned his Doctorate in Romance Philology and was subsequently appointed Full Professor of Portuguese Literature. In this capacity, he participated in numerous symposia, congresses, and seminars both in Portugal and abroad.<\/p>\n
As a citizen, he was a key collaborator in the administration of the General Board of the Autonomous District of Ponta Delgada. For several years, he served as a member, vice-president, and president of the Cultural Institute, during which time he coordinated the journal Insulana<\/i>. In 1983, he was honoured by President Ramalho Eanes<\/span><\/span> as a Commander of the Order of Public Instruction. A fellow of the Institute of Portuguese Culture and Language, he researched the oral literature of Santa Catarina and lectured at the Universities of S\u00e3o Paulo and Santa Catarina, serving as a guest professor at the latter in 1986 and 1987. He retired in 1989 due to a serious illness requiring treatment abroad; however, the following year, he accepted the invitation to lead the Public Library and Archive of Ponta Delgada, a position he held until 1995.<\/p>\n As a writer, his bibliography includes over sixty publications spanning research, essays, poetry, and fiction. His critical interest in ethnography and popular literature is evident in his fictional writing and the vivid sensitivity with which, from 1968 onwards, he depicted popular figures and regionalist atmospheres in his novels and short stories. Through these works, he sought to artistically craft an image of the people of S\u00e3o Miguel. Notable works include O Fundo do Lago<\/i> (1978), Os Xailes Negros<\/i> (1973), and O Al\u00e9m da Ilha<\/i> (1990). He also authored two fundamental titles for the understanding of Azorean popular culture: Aspectos do Cancioneiro Popular A\u00e7oriano<\/i> and Popular e Popularizante<\/i>.<\/p>\n
