\"Jos\u00e9<\/p>\n

Monsenhor Jos\u00e9 Gomes passed away on 17 December 1974 at his residence in Ponta Delgada, leaving behind a vast spiritual, pastoral, and social legacy in the religious life of S\u00e3o Miguel. As Rector of the Sanctuary of Hope and Ecclesiastical Dean of Ponta Delgada, he distinguished himself throughout his life as a sacred orator, educator, and a priest deeply connected to the Azorean community.<\/p>\n

He was born on 3 March 1888 in the parish of Relva, Ponta Delgada, into a family of farmers. This background profoundly shaped his pastoral vision, bringing to his priesthood a permanent connection to the working classes and the humble people of the islands.<\/p>\n

He entered the Diocesan Seminary of Angra do Hero\u00edsmo in 1901. Following the death of the diocesan bishop at the time, he was among a group of Azorean priests who travelled to Rome, where he was ordained on 27 November 1910 at the St. Apollinare Seminary by Pope Pius X<\/a><\/span>. Two days later, he was received in a private audience by the Pontiff, a symbolic moment for the group of Azorean clergy.<\/p>\n

Upon returning to the Azores, he celebrated his first Mass (Missa Nova<\/i>) on 28 December 1910 at the Church of Nossa Senhora das Neves in Relva, his home parish.<\/p>\n

Throughout his priestly career, he held various pastoral roles. He was initially stationed in Santa B\u00e1rbara on Terceira Island, later moving to the parish of Nossa Senhora da Oliveira in Faj\u00e3 de Cima and serving as chaplain of the Col\u00e9gio<\/i>. In 1926, he assumed the role of Vicar of Capelas, and in 1930, he took over the direction of the Col\u00e9gio de Sena Freitas, dedicated to primary and secondary education, a position he held until 7 August 1942. Following the death of Canon Jo\u00e3o Pereira D\u00e2maso, he was appointed Ecclesiastical Dean of Ponta Delgada on 17 November 1930, a title he held until his death.<\/p>\n

He was particularly noted for his connection to the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Esperan\u00e7a. He began his service there following the death of Father Ant\u00f3nio Correia and was later designated Rector of the Sanctuary when it was elevated to a Diocesan Sanctuary by the decree of Bishop D. Manuel Afonso de Carvalho<\/a><\/span>. He held this rectorship for 34 years, a period during which the sanctuary consolidated its religious and devotional importance in the Azores.<\/p>\n

His pastoral work also received international recognition. On 5 June 1956, by decision of Pope Pius XII<\/a><\/span>, he received the honorary title of Urban Prelate and Domestic Prelate of His Holiness, and on 7 October 1958, he was granted the honours of Apostolic Protonotary.<\/p>\n

A highly regarded orator, he delivered hundreds of sermons throughout his life and participated in religious ceremonies in the United States, including the blessing of the Church of Santo Cristo in Fall River and the episcopal consecration of D. Humberto Sousa Medeiros in Texas.<\/p>\n

He was also honoured by the local community; the Relva Parish Council named a street in the Nordela neighbourhood after him and, in 2005, posthumously awarded him the Diploma of Personal Merit.<\/p>\n

The Funeral<\/h3>\n

The funeral took place after his remains were transferred to the Sanctuary of Hope, where a Requiem Mass was celebrated. It was concelebrated by dozens of priests and presided over by the Diocesan Bishop, D. Manuel Afonso de Carvalho, with significant public attendance. The funeral procession then proceeded to the Relva Cemetery.<\/p>\n

At the graveside, Dr Carlos Melo Bento delivered words of tribute, highlighting Monsenhor Jos\u00e9 Gomes’s contribution to the Church and Azorean society.
