João da Motta Amaral
João da Motta Amaral, widower of Margarida Gouveia, passed away on 14 June 2012, at the Clínica do Bom Jesus in Ponta Delgada, at the age of 95.
He was born in Lagoa on 15 January 1917. He served as the Mayor of Lagoa (Presidente da Câmara Municipal) between 1959 and 1971. Throughout his long mandate, he promoted and completed significant infrastructure works and urban improvements within the municipality. Key interventions included new housing developments, water supply networks, street paving, the construction and modernisation of school buildings, and the creation of the municipal swimming pool projects that significantly improved the quality of life for the people of Lagoa.
In recognition of his commitment and his decisive contribution to the social and urban development of Lagoa, he was awarded the Silver Medal of Municipal Merit and the respective diploma by the City Council on 19 February 1997.
His funeral took place at the São Joaquim Cemetery, where he was cremated, following a Requiem Mass celebrated at the chapel of the Clínica do Bom Jesus.
