What to do in case of death?
Often, and fortunately we do not often lose someone, we do not know what to do in the event of a death, plus the fact that we are emotionally altered. For that matter, we are not sure what procedures to take into account in such a complicated situation. To that end, we felt it necessary to provide some clarification in the event of a death.
Therefore:
Regardless of where the death occurs, a Funeral Agency must be contacted immediately so that it can deal with the competent authorities in order to be able to perform the funeral.
There are, however, some procedures that differ from where the death occurs.
At home
If the death occurred in the habitual residence of the deceased, a relative or someone to whom the deceased was responsible, a Funeral Agency should be contacted immediately.
The Funeral Agency will contact the Assistant Physician, Family Physician or the Health Delegate of the area of residence.
The Funeral Agency must declare the occurrence of the death, namely, to the competent Civil Registry or Public Security Police.
In a hospital
Once the death occurred in a Hospital, it will be the Institution itself to contact the relatives. After the death is reported, a Funeral Agency must be contacted immediately, even before they go to the Hospital, in order to start the funeral process.
The respective hospital service will be contacted later by the Funeral Agency, duly authorized by the family, in order to deal with all the procedures related to the death registration, in the competent places.
The Funeral Agency must declare the occurrence of the death, namely, to the competent Civil Registry or Public Security Police.
In the homes
Once the death occurred in a Home or Health House, it will be the Institution itself to contact the relatives. After the death is reported, a Funeral Agency must be contacted immediately, in order to start the funeral process.
Once the agreement between the Funeral Agency and the family or someone appointed for this purpose has been obtained, the Institution should be contacted in order to inform which Agency is responsible for the funeral service.
Subsequently, the contracted funeral agency will deal with every process.
In other places
If a death occurred following a car accident, suicide, drowning, crime, etc., the competent authority (P.S.P. or G.N.R.) should be contacted in the area where it occurred. It immediately notifies the health authority and the Public Prosecutor of the area where the death occurred.
In these cases an examination of autopsy is decreed by law to the body of the deceased.
The next of kin should contact a Funeral Agency, who will be informed by the official authorities of the date and time of the autopsy, and keep the family members informed during the process.
